The Chao Phraya River Taxi: My Favorite Day Trip from Bangkok

This might be one of my favorite things to do in Bangkok, and I should know: I've done it more than a few times. Every time I had a visitor come see me, or just wanted to do something totally local, this was my go-to.

The river taxis on the Chao Phraya are a great way to see the city from the water. Temples and churches along the banks, Royal Thai Navy boats, oil tankers, cruises, taxis. It's all out there happening at once.

A few tips before you go:

• Take the boat before the heat kicks in. The river gets hot, and the trip to Nonthaburi takes around 45-60 minutes.
• Don't get on a tourist boat. The local taxis are safe, cheap and way more fun. And you're doing this like a local, right?
• You can board anywhere along the route, Bangkok to Nonthaburi is just the most popular stretch. There are stops every 10 minutes or so, and you can always grab a taxi back if you don't want to make the return trip.

Take the Orange Flag boat on the Chao Phraya River Express. It's the reliable one, cheap, and covers the scenic stretch past all the good stuff. Most people board at Sathorn Pier, which is right next to BTS Saphan Taksin, so getting there from anywhere in Bangkok is easy.

Now, my favorite part. At the end of the line in Nonthaburi, I always go eat at a place called River Tree House. Amazing Thai food, great setting, right on the water. When you get off the boat, just ask any tuk-tuk or taxi driver to take you there. They'll know it.
